Weir Ancestry Cathcart Glasgow Scotland

This evening, I am posting a video clip of a Weir family memorial from Cathcart Cemetery, Glasgow.

This is unusual in that most of the family actually died in Belfast, Northern Ireland and hence I don't fully understand the rationale for the memorial in Glasgow. It would appear that the family were involved in the Northern Irish linen industry. Here is a list of the names:

Pinkerton Ancestry Cathcart Glasgow Scotland

This evening, I am posting a video clip of a very interesting Pinkerton family memorial located at Cathcart Cemetery, Glasgow and which provides a link with the British Raj (Empire) in India.

The inscription records the deaths of:

  • Surgeon-Major-General John Pinkerton of the Indian Medical Service , 1833-1916.
  • Elizabeth Brown, wife of above, 1833-1908.
  • Son of above, John Pinkerton MB.CM who died and is buried at Erzerum, Armenia on Jan 7th 1878 age 24.
Question arises as to what the son of a senior British military officer was doing in Armenia. There was a Battle of Erzurum 1877-78 during the Russo-Turkish War but it would appear that the British were not involved. The initials MB.CM signify medical qualifications and one would guess that at age 24 John Pinkerton would have just qualified. Maybe a question for the Pinkerton Detective Agency?!

Neilson Ancestry Gorbals, Glasgow Scotland

This morning, I visited the Rose Garden in the Gorbals which is a very old burying ground but now a public park with memorial stones embedded in the perimeter walls.

The video clip below shows a memorial erected by John and James Neilson in memory of their father, Walter Neilson, Engineer at Govan Colliery, who died 1821. The inscription also records the death of John Neilson, Engineer at Oakbank Foundry, Glasgow on Oct 10th 1855 age 75 yrs.

Later: March 2nd 2010. I again visited the Gorbals Rose Garden in response to comments made to this posting. I obtained a fresh video (with a better camera) and a still image. The 1821 date adverted to above may or may not relate to the death of the Neilson brothers' father. The inscription reads " Property of John and James Neilson sons of Walter Neilson, Engineer, Govan Colliery 1821. " The date 1821 could relate to the date the burial plot was purchased.
